Thanks Emma, Dish and Jonny. It seems reading the Irresistable Revolution might be a good idea...

Dish-no.6 sounds like a barrel of laughs

Jonny-I love the fact that you haven't even finished several of your selections! Great reply though-even longer than my original post.

Thanks Sam...I asked for your choices and critique of my own thrown in for free! I must concede you have had more Dylan in your life than I've had. That said 'like a rolling stone' would not make my top 15.

Blowin'in the wind is class.

How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?

Listen to the song, acknowledge the quality.

Hey Tim, I wont lie i'm not the worlds greatest reader but here are the 10 books which have influenced me and in no particular order.

1. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Read it at school, and re-read it last year - Atticus finch is in my books a bit of a legend. What did I learn? The idea to always try and see where other people are coming from by pretending to walk about within their shoes. Brilliant thinking!

2. Reason for God by Tim Keller. Finished reading this in September, and would have to say utterly cracking, so much so if you ask JT he'll say i've been raving about it. What did I learn? Try understand why you believe what you believe. Also challenge your attitude and it also just painted what Jesus did in a new light for me. Thoroughly commend it.

3. The Bible by various authors though inspired by God. Have finally made it the whole way through the book. What did I learn? Alot. A History of Israel in the Old Testament, God's plan running from creation and into the future, how Jesus fits into things, and how Jesus called us to change our lives. Still much to learn from this library of books.

4. Irresistable revolution by Shane Claibourne. Whilst not agreeing with everything written in this book, i still enjoyed it and was challenged by what Christianity can look like if lived authentically.

5.Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman. What did I learn? Fascinating fantasy world, more in depth and adulty than the Harry Potter series, and just generally I really enjoyed them and it influenced me in that it made me think more about why writers write books.

6. Issues Facing Christians Today by John Stott. Still in the process of reading this book, chapters feel epic and there's just so much to think about and ponder through. Another one to commend to thee.

7. Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone by JK Rowling. I remember reading this when I was 9 or 10 in P6 or P7 in school. It was relatively new and up for the Smarties Book Prize. It was a horribly addictive read, and it influenced me by showing me that books can be good to read and enjoyable.

8. Matters of Life & Death by John Wyatt. A book looking at matters at the start of life e.g. IVF, conception, abortion etc and matters at the end of life e.g. euthanasia and physician assisted suicide. A good balanced book, which i'd turn to for advice re: issues to do with such things!

9. CS Lewis Signature Collection by CS Lewis. Great collection of CS Lewis books, i think it doesnt have the screwtape letters but there are alot of good things to ponder through in here and alot of things to make thee think!

10. Down to Earth Discipling by Scott Morton. Still reading my way through this one, but its definitely a book I can see altering how I think.

That will do for now...

:) I like talking about good books! That's funny Emma, my top 3 are also in yours! I think I was influenced most by books I read when I was a child and teenager but I can't remember half of them. Have mentioned one or two though in the list.

1. The Bible
2. Red Moon Rising by Pete Greig
3. Irresistable Revolution by Shane Claibourne
4. Children of the Voice triology by Ishmael
5. The Bookseller of Kabul by Asne Sierstad
6. We wish to inform you that tomorrow we will be killed with our families by Philip Gourevitch (I know, happy title!)
7. A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth
8. The Narnia series by C.S. Lewis
9. Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden
10. this book of World War 1 poems I have but I've forgotten what's it called. It's sitting in my shelf in glasgow right now and I'm not there! Tis filled with poem by Wilfred Owen and other such characters.

Not bad choices Tim, I'm with you on a few of them. However, Idiot Wind is just too long. And for your runner up, you've got blowin in the wind? Each to his own, but the only Dylan-protest-song I can handle is Times They Are a-Changin, which is head and shoulders above the rest.

I'll give you the definative one. Chronologically:

1. Don't Think Twice It's Alright

2. The Times They Are a-Changin

3. Mr Tambourine Man

4. Like a Rolling Stone

5. Not Dark Yet

How's that? Not enough obscure ones in there?

And some almosts: Girl From the North Country, It Aint Me Babe, It's Alright Ma, I Want You, Froggie Went A-Courtin'
